Tiger Cub Dies At Lucknow Zoo

City zoo has lost another tiger cub. The Royal Bengal tigress Ipshita had given birth to four cubs, one of them an albino, between November8 and 9. While the albino cub had recovered at the zoo hospital, its another sibling, a normal looking one, died on Sunday morning. "We saw it lying in a corner of the enclosure where it was sheltered with its mother," said zoo director Renu Singh. Earlier, a tiger cub had died on Tuesday.

As a precautionary move, zoo doctors have now moved the second surviving cub to the hospital as well. "Probably Ipshita is not able to take care of its cubs and we do not want to take any chances now", said Singh. Both the surviving cubs will now be hand-reared and fed with the goat's diluted milk. The cub which died on Sunday looked very weak and zoo authorities believe that Ipshita is not in a position to meet the feed-demands of her cubs. "She, though, is a normal adult tigress and is being given calcium and multi vitamins," added the director. Both the surviving cubs are now under 24 hours medical observation. It was after a long gap of 14 years that the zoo got the newborn Royal Bengal tiger cubs but it seems the joyous celebrations went in the air early.

Air We Breathe In Lucknow

Forsake your private vehicles and go for `pool' transport. The drastic increase in vehicular pollution in residential areas of Lucknow is due to substantial increase in vehicles plying on city roads. Going for pool transport could be the contribution of Lucknowites towards saving the environmental quality.

The `assessment of environmental status of Lucknow' report released by Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) does not portend well for health of Lucknowites. "Pollutant concentrations in terms of suspended/respirable particulate matter (SPM and RSPM) in urban atmosphere of Lucknow city has been found to be two to five times higher than national standards", said the study report. The assessment of ambient air quality of city was carried out at 10 locations --- Aliganj, Vikasnagar, Indiranagar, Gomtinagar, Hussainganj, Charbagh, Alambagh, Aminabad, Chowk and Amausi -- during September-October 2009 with respect to SPM, RSPM, SO2 and NO and noise level.

The study has been conducted under the aim to study trends of pollutants over a period of time, to assess day and night time noise to ensure compliance of permissible noise levels and to create a database for future use

Malihabadi Dusseheri mango gets GI registration

Malihabadi Dusseheri mango, the pulpy and rich-flavoured summer fruit grown in the Lucknow region, is the latest to get geographical exclusivity rights after Banarasi saree, Puneri Pagadi, Tirupati laddu and Darjeeling tea secured theirs.

"The mango variety has secured 'Geographical Indication (GI) rights' on September 11. The move would help farmers growing this variety obtain better remunerative prices for their produce," said National Horticulture Board (NHB) managing director Bijay Kumar. The NHB had applied to Chennai-based Geographical Indication Registry in October 2008 to secure exclusivity for the mango variety. The GI is the intellectual property right that restricts others from marketing or processing a product in the same name. Currently, some farmers from other parts of the country are taking advantage of the popularity of this variety and selling their dusseheri mangoes under this name.

Earlier in December last year, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar had asked the NHB to commercialize the world-famous mangoes of the place with the grant of the GI status. The exclusivity rights will enable growers to sell their produce under the Malihabadi brand, which will also help them seek new markets. The Malihabadi Dusseheri mango plant bears fruit in every two years
